Shoulder pain in people is increasing each day. A common diagnosis to this shoulder pain is ‘
shoulder bursitis
‘ or ‘
shoulder tendonitis.
‘ When inflammation occurs within the shoulder joint in any of the particular area, this is named as
Shoulder bursitis
and
rotator cuff tendonitis
. Both the terms are just different names given to the same type of problem. The most perfect terminology is ‘
impingement syndrome
‘ which is given to the set of symptoms. When the inflammation occurs at the bursa of the shoulder that surrounds the tendons, it is named as
Shoulder Tendonitis
. When the inflammation is caused at the rotator cuff tendons, it is named as
rotator cuff tendonitis
.
Several bones, ligaments and muscles forms a joint connecting the upper proximity of the chest. This gives rise to a complex shoulder joint. When inflammation occurs between the top arm bone and the tip of the shoulder, the
Impingement syndrome
occurs. The bursa and the tendons of the rotator cuff also lies in these area which protects the tendons. The tendons slide with ease within this space. When the space narrows, preventing the ease in motion of the tendons, the inflammation occurs. This inflammation makes the tendons and the bursa thick making the space even more clumsy. Hence each time these tendons move, it gets pinched off. Thus, the name impingement syndrome.
What Causes Shoulder Bursitis ?
- The pinching of the tendons and bursa is defined as the Impingement syndrome. Sometimes the
shape of the bone
can result in lesser space for free movement of the tendons and bursa. Hence even if little thickening in them can cause sever symptoms.
- An initial injury can also set on the inflammation.
What Are The Symptoms Of Shoulder Bursitis ?
- Severe pain is felt when the arm is placed above the height of the head, or overhead activities.
- Feeling pain while sleeping in the night
- Pain felt over the outside of the shoulder or the upper arm.
